The prickly pear is a plant with no enemies, so the cultivation cost is very low, whereas the best output of the crop requires warm climate with good exposure to sunlight. The most suitable soil for its cultivation is the average composition soil that has good drainage. It has no particular preference in the ground as long as it is not wet and drains well. It can grow in rocky, sandy or dry locations in shallow or medium depth soils, poor in organic matter even slopes where other crops are difficult or impossible to grow.
It grows less in clayey and calcareous soils than in the average composition soils. Its development in rocky soils is achieved thanks to the strong root system that gradually causes disruption and disintegration to them.
